Requirements and Eligibility

Applicants must have written language and comprehension mastery in addition to the people skills and professionalism required for the work environment. We recommend relevant training and require that all applicants pass a background check and drug screening.
Applicants must be fully licensed under strict ABST regulations, pass a 300-question multiple choice psychological background test, complete a pre-screening interview, and pass a situational awareness interview before training. Frequently Asked Questions
Security guards must be licensed in Alberta and meet the basic licensing requirements, including an accredited 40-hour training course and a passing score on the SSIA exam.
After completing the mandatory training course, applicants can contact the PSKN Support Desk to register for the online exam, which is administered by a certified proctor at many locations in Alberta.
The exam fee is included in the training course registration cost, but each additional exam attempt costs $60.
The Alberta Registrar keeps a record of your training and licensing exam status on file, so PSKN will automatically submit your results.
On average, applications are processed within six to eight weeks, but it may depend on the volume of applicants. You can call the Security Programs department at 1-877-462-0791 for more information about your application status.
You may still be able to obtain a license, but the decision is made by the Solicitor General. Each case is considered individually, so you can apply for consideration.
